Historical Places
War Cemetery-
The War Cemetery at Imphal which is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds the graves of those gallant British and Indian soldiers who died during the Second World War.
Shaheed Minar-
Shaheed Minar at Bir Tikendrajit Park was erected in the memory of Meitei and tribal martyrs, who were hanged by the British in 1891, for raising their voice against British occupation of India.
Langthabal-
Langthabal is a small hill where one can see relics of an old historic palace and temples. According to archeologists, these relics set amidst jackfruit and pine trees, has immense architectural importance. From atop this hill tourists can get a good view of the Manipur University.
Red Hill (Maibam Lokpa Ching)-
Red Hill is actually a hillock where the Allied Forces fought with the invading Japanese during World War II. At the foot of the Red Hill tourists can see the "India Peace Memorial", a monument constructed by Japanese war veterans.
Bishnupur-
Not far away from Imphal lies Bishnupur where one can see the conical shaped temple of Lord Vishnu. This temple was built in 1467 and during that period King Kyamba ruled over Manipur. The temple has a unique Chinese architectural design.
Moirang-
The Indian National Army (INA) hoisted the Indian tri-color for the first time on Indian soil on April 14 1944. The place was Moirang which is 45 kms from Imphal. Apart from a bronze statue of Netaji in uniform, the INA museum has preserved letters, photographs and other important INA memorabilia.
Khongjom-
Khongjom is the place where brave Manipuri fighters led by Major General Paona Brajabashi fought with the invading British Army in 1891 and achieved martyrdom. Tourists can see a War Memorial on the top of this hill and every year on April 23 the state observes Khongjom Day.
Sekta Archaeological Living Museum-
This unique museum which is a historical hotspot preserves the evidence of the practice of secondary burial and is a protected archaeological site. Sekta is 16 kms from Imphal.
Temples
Govindajee Temple-
The beautiful Govindajee temple with its twin gold domes stands just beside the royal palace. The temple is a historic Vaishnavite centre and the presiding deity of Govindajee is flanked on both sides by deties of Lord Krishna, Lord Balarama and Lord Jagannath.
Moirang-
It is at Moirang where one can see the ancient temple of Lord Thangjing (a pre-Hindu deity). During the festival Moirang Lai Haraoba which falls in the month of May, people gather in this temple in bright traditional costumes and sing and dance in the glory of the Lord. The graceful Khamba Thoibi dance of Manipur originated from Moirang village.
Kaina-
This Hindu sacred place is atop a beautiful hillock that is 29 kms from Imphal. It is said that Bhagyachandra who was the king of Manipur was an ardent devotee of Shri Govindajee and one night the king saw his Lord in a dream who asked him to build a temple. The king was specifically told to carve out the image of Shri Govindajee from a jackfruit tree that was growing at Kaina. During Raas Lila this divine dream is enacted through a ceremonial dance drama at the temple.
Koubru Leikha-
It is one of the holy mountains of Manipur and at its foothills one can see an ancient temple of Lord Shiva (Lord Koubru) which is believed to be three hundred years old. During the month of Shravan and during Mahashiv Ratri (Lord Shiva's birthday), almost twenty-five thousands devotees converge here to offer their prayers.
Wildlife Sanctuary
Manipur Zoological Park-
Manipur Zoological Park is 6 kms from Imphal and here tourists can view one of the rarest species deer in the world, the brown antlered deer or Sangai in Manipuri.
Keibul Lamjao National Park-
This Park is unique in the sense that it is the only floating wildlife park in the world. Keibul Lamjao National Park is located on the south west part of Loktak Lake and is the last natural habitat of the brow-antlered deer or Sangai.
Ethinic Tour
Khwairamband Bazaar (Ima Market)-
This market is unique because it is an all women's market where almost 3000 'Imas' (mothers) sell items like vegetables, fruits, fish, household groceries, exquisite handlooms and household tools, beautiful wicker works and basketry in their stalls. The Ima market is situated at the heart of Imphal.
Andro-
This small town which is 27 kms from Imphal is actually an ancient scheduled caste village of Manipur. There is a cultural complex as well as a Doll-house here which exhibits/displays potteries and dolls of the north-eastern region.
